Lines of Enclosure || Lines of Flight

Notes on scoring Chapelle Charbon: spent the day walking.

Transport strike across Paris. Forecast is for rain. All around me underground commutes are now at the surface as people spill out onto gridlocked boulevards.

Made my way towards Chapelle Charbon by following the metro stops above ground (the only familiar waypoints to the site).

Abbesses > Barbès > La Chapelle > then north to Marx Dormoy and Porte de La Chapelle.

The zone of Porte de la Chapelle is an enclosure marked by three main transport lines. The Northern and Eastern mainlines leading out of the city — lines of flight — bounded to the north by the Périphérique ring road — a line of enclosure.

Arriving at the disused coal and cargo train depot, I walk the periphery of the future site of Chapelle Charbon park, taking numerous photographs and sound recordings while thinking about correspondences. How do you score liminality? ‘A map is a matter of performance’ wrote Deleuze & Guattari in On the Line. I decide to make a concrete survey. Perhaps then, between the lines, a score will emerge:
